Metal Options

The most common metals options in this workshop are sterling silver and gold alloys. Together we will decide on the best options for your project. It all depends on your ideas and your ideal price point. It is important to me that you are able to make informed decisions. Once I have a good idea of what you want to make I will give you a breakdown of the cost.

All of the metals I work with are 100% recycled. Sourced from a refiner with conservation practices and policies around water, energy, and waste.

Alloys

24 karat gold is 100% pure gold. Fine silver is 100% pure silver. These are the elemental form, that naturally occur in the earth. Pure gold is a rich, yellow color. Fine silver is bright white and will not oxidize. They are far too soft to hold up to the wear that rings and most jewelry will take. To make metals more durable the ancient technology of alloying was discovered. Alloys are created by mixing different metals with the pure gold or silver to create a stronger version of itself.

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver. It is usually alloyed copper, but other materials like palladium or argentium can be added to give it more desirable qualities. Most of the more durable sterling silver alloys are still softer than the gold alloy options.

Colors & Karats of Gold

Karats of gold are created by mixing different ratios of metals. 14k gold is incredibly durable containing 58% pure gold.  18k gold is also strong but not quite as durable at 75% pure gold. This makes 18k a richer yellow color and the more precious (and expensive) option. All colors of gold contain the same amount of pure gold per karat.

All gold starts as pure yellow gold, the metals it is alloyed with gives gold its range of color. With 14k and 18k yellow gold the alloy mix is part silver and copper, with a small amount of zinc. With rose and peach gold the amount of copper is slightly higher and silver slightly lower, while still containing the same amount of pure gold per karat. Green gold has higher silver and lower copper. With white gold palladium or nickel is added to give it its white hue.
